The Art of Being
One of my favorite grad school professors told me, “Donna, you are very action oriented. You need to spend less time doing and more time being.”
That whole conversation took me back to a time in my faith where I read through the Bible and underlined every statement where Jesus said to “do” or “be.” Can you believe I actually tried for a while to live my life by those words? It was exhausting. When I read how Jesus concluded this Be-Attitudes message, I wonder how I could have been so wrong.
“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept…. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand…By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.”
How many of us discount our worthiness as light bearers? We question our qualifications. Or we fire ourselves because we had a lousy start to the day.
Friends, His mercies are new every morning. Heck, I’m going with the minute-by-minute mercy distribution because I mess up more than once a day. I’ve come to believe and accept that God didn’t make me to hide me under a bucket. When you read further in Matthew chapter 5, you see Jesus calling these guys out on misinterpretations of the law, misguided thinking that I call monkey messages. I love the way He closed it up:
“In a word, what I’m saying is, Grow up. You’re kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.
